Top 3 Legends Of The Mid-Autumn Festival

While mooncakes and lanterns come to mind, there are actually interesting stories behind the mid-autumn festival. Three of the most well-known legends about the mooncake festival will be shared in this article.

The 1st Legend: Chang E Flying To The Moon

The story of Chang E is one of the most famous legends of the mid-autumn festival. It is the most widely told story and by Chang E, we are referring to a beautiful and kind-hearted lady, not the Chang E from Mobile Legends who sits on the crescent moon and shoots stars that hurt, a lot.

It is said that in ancient times, there were ten suns in the sky and the extreme heat made it difficult for the people. The hero Hou Yi, who was a great archer, shot down nine of the suns. Later on, Hou Yi met a beautiful lady named Chang E and they got married.

The Queen of Heaven wanted to thank Hou Yi and bestowed him with a bottle of elixir. When consumed, the elixir will be able to help the person ascend to heaven and become immortal. However, Hou Yi loved his wife Change E deeply and didn’t want to leave her. He decided to keep the elixir at home.

One day, when Hou Yi was out hunting with his disciples, a villain named Pengmeng broke into their home and ordered Chang E to hand over the elixir. In desperation, Chang E drank the elixir. She started to fly and because she wanted to stay near her husband, she flew to the nearest place which was the moon and stayed there forever.

Hou Yi missed Chang E dearly and would prepare food and offerings to pray to her on full moons. Over time, this custom was followed by many people from all over the world.

The 2nd Legend: The Jade Rabbit

A long time ago, there were three animals living in the forest: a monkey, a fox and a rabbit.

One day, three immortals came to Earth and pretended to be beggars. They asked the animals for food. The fox and the monkey both gave food to the immortals.

However, the rabbit did not have any food. Wanting to help the three beggars, the rabbit said, “I’m sorry that I don’t have any food to help, but you can eat me” and jumped into the fire.

The immortals were very touched by the rabbit’s actions and decided to bestow it with immortality and allowed the rabbit to live in the Moon Palace.

The 3rd Legend: Wu Gang Chopping The Cherry Bay

Wu Gang was a woodcutter who wanted to gain immortality. He followed the immortals to learn from them. However, he made a mistake and was banished to the moon.

He was asked to chop the Cherry Bay and was told that if he could cut it down, he would become immortal.

Little did he know that the Cherry Bay was a very special tree. It had the special ability to regenerate immediately so it grows right back after Wu Gang chops it. It was impossible to chop the tree and this endless job was said to be a punishment for Wu Gang.
